Girlface Africa programs
Girlface Africa seeks to conduct the following programs at grass root level to the girls and young women in Kenya: Self-actualization according to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, healthy relationship workshops program, public speaking skill building program, community service opportunities program, academic support program and leadership building skills program.
- SELF ACTUALIZATION PROGRAM - Abraham Maslow Hierarchy Of Needs
Self-actualization also called the Hierarchy of needs was developed by Abraham Maslow. It’s a theory that states that people are motivated by five basic levels of needs namely:
- Physiological needs
Physiological needs are needed for the proper functioning of the body at physical, mental and emotional levels. This level covers the necessities of daily, and long term living in return keeping us healthy and immune to germs, in addition to getting proper levels of vitamins, sunlight, peaceful sleep, and proper mental healthcare. This level helps the girls at their adolescent stage to fully understand their bodies hence take proper care at all times.
- Safety needs
This need is second on Maslow’s hierarchy. In line with our physiological needs, it helps with our basic function to live a proper, stability in life, healthy, and safe life. This is the stage where the girls are taught to be safe and avoid activities that may endanger them.
- Love needs
It’s about both feeling loved, and feeling love for others. For example: relationships at the family level, true friendships, and need to belong. This is the most important and highlighted level since it’s crucial at the adolescent stage. This is the stage that they are still discovering their bodies and sometimes make wrong choices.
- Esteem needs
This is the fourth hierarchy of need according to Maslow. It’s about the way we feel about ourselves. Girls and young women are taught how to find, recognize and appreciate themselves.
- Self-actualization needs
The last need is called Self-Actualization (“realization or fulfilment of one’s talents and potentials especially considered as a drive or need present in everyone.”). The girls and women will be taught how to answer the following questions:
- What is their potential and do they know that they have it?
- Are they helping others when needed
- Are they offering their talents and potentials to those who may benefit from it
- Are they themselves fulfilled with their achievements after having helped others and themselves?
HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WORKSHOPS PROGRAM
Briefly under this program we strive to:
- Define and spell out characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships
- Explain to the girls the benefits of communication with their parents/caregivers on sensitive matters
- Increase teens’ skills, comfort, and ability to discuss relationship issues wit h their parents and caregivers.
-
PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILL BUILDING PROGRAM
Public speaking is an important life skill for youth and adults. When working with youth to develop public speaking skills, we consider several guidelines such as making notes; explain nerve breakdowns and daily practice.
-
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM
Through active engagement, we encourage the youth to take on ownership and become forever contributors to the local and international well-being of the community and the world at large.
-
LEADERSHIP BUILDING SKILLS PROGRAM
At Girlface Africa we encourage the youth to take up leadership roles starting at school extending to their homes.
